Background

I'm a long-term resident of Fairbanks, Alaska. I began the Alaska wiki so that Alaskans would have open access to media that will promote communication, and self expression. It is a place where we can use our own voices to tell people about this place we live.

Professional

I have been an elementary school teacher in Alaska since 1983. I earned an MEd in Language and Literacy from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 2002. Since then I have been working to develop tools that promote multiple literacies and multicultural community. I am exploring ways to integrate mathematics and language arts instruction. I am also working to promote a teacher research forum in which teachers can collaboratively develop classroom research projects and share their findings.

I work at Denali Elementary School, the oldest elementary school in Fairbanks still in service. In the Fall of 2005 we will be moving into a new building that is adjacent to the one that has served many thousands of Alaskans over the last 50+ years.

During the summer and fall of 2005, I participated in a workshop with the Alaska Science Consortium.

Personal

I live in a rural area that is accessible by road, and my interests include many outdoor and family recreation|recreational activities that are enjoyed by other Alaskans. Gardening in Alaska is an interesting challenge that keeps us, busy for about half the year. Boats, fishing, snowboarding, skiing, and skijoring - skiing with dogs - are other pastimes that make life interesting here for me and my family.
